Laurie Cavey is interested in Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching. This is the mathematical knowledge that is particular to the work of teaching mathematics. Researchers in this field have demonstrated how this knowledge is necessarily different from the mathematical knowledge of the mathematician or other professions that rely heavily upon mathematics. College experiences for future teachers should develop this type of applied mathematical knowledge but may not for many, especially secondary teachers.
