Spring Break Trip 2009 to McDowell County, WV with AID for America

Purpose
This will be a forum for relief workers, family, and friends to observe, contribute, and reflect on the trip.
Thank you to the College of Education @JMU, specifically Dr. Rich Ingram, for support in enabling this (fingers-crossed) "live" journal of the trip. We would also like to thank Dean Wishon and the Exceptional Education Faculty for their continued support of our sustained volunteer efforts in McDowell County, WV.
Trip Mission
The JMU community has embraced a number of relief efforts since 2005. Recently, students and I have come to realize the importance of sustained volunteer efforts in reversing the horrific effects of poverty on the lives of the people of McDowell County, WV--one of the poorest areas in the United States. We pledge to BE THE CHANGE needed to empower the residents of this area to reclaim their community. We will work on several initiatives while we are volunteering this March, including, working on reconstruction of homes and establishing partnerships with community members and agencies.
