Instructional Technology Resource Teacher, Rockingham County Public Schools

I live in Mt. Crawford, VA with my wife, Becky, and three year old daugther Anneliese. I'm a graduate of UVA often find myself at http://www.thesabre.com to keep up with the latest UVA sports news.

Interacting with my daughter is one of the most enjoyable learning experiences I've ever had. She's only three, but it is amazing to me how much she has changed in the last year. Just recently, our bedtime story routine that always consisted of me reading to her as she pretended to read to me has changed significantly. Now Daddy, Bert and Ernie are students and SHE is the schoolteacher. I found out very quickly that students in her class are NOT to speak before being recognized and she'd rather call on Bert and Ernie than Daddy :( It took several nights before I got to act as the schoolteacher because, according to Anneliese, schoolteachers are supposed to be "ladies". Well, excuse me! I guess all of this is a result of her watching Miss Beadle, the teacher in the Little House on the Prarie shows.

I've always approached learning from an analytical perspective. I tend to learn best through observation and experimentation. I find learning activities that focus on creativity and are unstructured to be difficult.

My highest score on the multiple intelligences test ... Logical-Mathematical ... go figure.
Research Topic: The Emergencence and Effectiveness of Online Professional Development

I hope that an evaluation of research coupled with a survey of teachers will help me better understand the pros and cons of online professional development. Traditional methods of technology training are becoming more difficult to plan due to the time constraints of the professional educator. I hope to find some direction as to what methods are most effective (both in terms of cost and results) and practical for use in the K-12 setting.

I'll clean up the citations below once I figure out the APA thing. I'm a math major for goodness' sake. I got through UVA writing only 2 or 3 significant research papers....a feat in itself :) My mantra in class selection was...if it requires a paper find a bigger section!

Question for YOU: Roughly what percentage of your colleagues do you think would prefer online vs traditional technology training?

I Rich Clemens believe that more people think that they would prefer online training than would actually follow through with it, and would end up preferring face to face professional development. So here is my gut reaction today:

I know that this is not based on any kind of research - just MY gut reaction!
