Module 4 Application: How do I apply the MathVIDS strategies to my classroom setting?
Topic 2 How shall I plan?
Activity 1 Mathematics Instructional Planning Pyramid
Purpose To use the results from the Mathematics Dynamic Assessment to develop a foundation for effective instruction for your students.

Description

In this activity you will be using the information you have gained from the Mathematics Dynamic Assessment and your knowledge of the Big Ideas for the mathematical concept you are planning to teach. There are 3 tasks in this activity .

Task 1
  1. See the following example, which displays how to use the Instructional Planning Pyramid to identify those math concepts that all students will learn, that most students will learn, and that some students will learn.

    Date: April 14, 2006
    Class Period: 3rd

    Mathematics Concept/Standard: Comparing fractions

Overall Instructional Goals for Groups (*Planning Pyramid)

  2. Click here to download a planning pyramid template to plan your own teaching.
  3. As you work through this process, consider the amount of teacher support each group will need and identify the level of support needed for all, most (small group) and some (individual) students. Also identify the primary level (concrete, representational or abstract) of understanding of the mathematical concept shared by all students
Task 2

Now use your knowledge of the Planning Pyramid, information learned about your students through the Dynamic Math Assessment, and your knowledge about effective mathematics instruction for struggling learners (MathVIDS Instructional Strategies) from Module 3 to download and complete the Classroom Planning Guide.

Task 3

Share your Mathematics Dynamic Assessment results, your Instructional Planning Pyramid and your Classroom Planning Guide with a colleague. Keep the following questions in mind:

  • Does he/she have suggestions for the important teaching ideas? (teacher instruction, student practice, & extension)
  • Does he/she have suggestions for evaluation?
  • For maintenance?

Evaluation Complete the Learning Check at Learning Check 4.2.
